Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (age 3-6)
“The secret to encouraging lifelong Faith and love of God (in a child) is understanding the developmental Faith that marks the child’s spiritual development.” – Maria Montessori
St. Jude is proud to offer the Montessori-based “Catechesis of the Good Shepherd” program for children ages 3-6. This hands-on, experiential way to experience the gospel message is offered from 11:00 – 12:00 on Sunday mornings during the school year.
The program, lead by a specially-trained catechist (whose certification includes an extensive 90-hour course and completion of a practicum) takes place in “The Atrium,” a dedicated space in St. Jude School. Through prayerful gestures, sensory experiences and solemn processions, the little ones come to know and love the Catholic Faith and its liturgy. Everything in The Atrium has been custom-made to “their size.” Every element of The Atrium points to Christ. The Atrium includes features such as a special “prayer table,” a child-sized altar, ambo, baptismal font and a collection of specially-created dioramas which are used to introduce the children to gospel stories. Through use of the senses, the children use their entire bodies to internalize the gospel message.
Through the program, the children learn the items used at Mass, the meaning of the various liturgical colors, familiar liturgical gestures and even the geography of the Holy Land, establishing Jesus as a real person in time and place.
Assistants, artisans and parent help are welcomed.
